The winter of 1139 will disrupt Brother Cadfael's tranquil life in Shrewsbury with the most disturbing events. Raging civil war has sent refugees fleeing north from Worcester. Among them are two orphans from a noble family, a boy of thirteen and an 18-year-old girl of great beauty, and their companion, a young Benedictine nun. But the trio, never reaching Shrewsbury, have disappeared somewhere in the wild countryside.

Cadfael feels afraid these three lost lambs, but another call for help sends him to the Church of Saint Mary. A wounded monk, found naked and bleeding by the roadside, will surely die without Cadfael's healing arts. Why this holy man has been attacked and what his fevered ravings reveal soon give Brother Cadfael a clue to the fate of the missing travelers. Now Cadfael sets out on a dangerous quest to find them. The road will lead him to a chill and terrible murder and a tale of passion gone awry. And at journey's end awaits a vision of what is best, and worst, in humankind...in Ellis Peters's most stunning depiction yet of love and war.

The Virgin in the Ice The Sixth Chronicle of Brother Cadfael (Audible Audio Edition) Ellis Peters Vanessa Benjamin Inc Blackstone Audio Books

This 12th century mystery series by Ellis Peters take place in a fog of civil war, where the English and Welsh were raiding each other’s borders and supporting one or another claimant to the English throne: Empress Maud or King Stephen. In spite of the ongoing violence, the author suffuses her novels with a deep sense of peace and contentment in the monastic life. A monk from the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul at Shrewsbury, Brother Cadfael, the ex-Crusader-turned herbalist is her solver of murders and mysteries of the heart. Ellis weaves a rich tapestry of his daily life on the war-torn Welsh border.

This sixth novel in a series of 21 mysteries, "The Virgin in the Ice," begins in November of 1139 with the sacking of Worcester. Some of the fugitives reach Shrewsbury while the roads are still clear of snow. Then a visitor, Sub-Prior Herward of Worcester comes to the Shrewsbury abbey with news:

“I am sent to make enquiry after two noble children who were in Benedictine care in our town, and fled from it when the attack fell upon us. They have not returned, and we have traced their steps as far as the borders of this county and there lost them."

No one has seen the missing brother and sister, and as the first snowstorm of the winter begins, Brother Cadfael is sent to another abbey to treat a monk who has been attacked by robbers and left for dead. The delirious Brother, Elyas, mutters about a party of refugees that included two children, and Cadfael sets out in the snow to look for them.

What he finds is the missing boy and the body of a young woman who may be his sister, frozen into the ice of a forest stream.

"The Virgin in the Ice" is a grim tale of anarchy and the lawless men who try to profit from their neighbors' distress. Just when it looks like the good guys don't stand a chance, the mysterious Olivier de Bretagne appears on the scene. He is also tracking the missing children, and his arrival triggers one firework after another until the book's rousing climax and Brother Cadfael's ultimate revelation. I can't think of another book in this amazing series that packs so much derring-do and so many deeds of valor.

I am sure that if you've read this far into the Brother Cadfael mysteries, you will want to continue to the end. It will be a very satisfying and worthwhile journey.

The Virgin in the Ice The Sixth Chronicle of Brother Cadfael (Audible Audio Edition) Ellis Peters Vanessa Benjamin Inc Blackstone Audio Books Reviews

This volume of the Cadfael books is mystery and historical fiction set against the background of the civil war between Empress Maud and King Stepen. The division of the country caused by this war, appropriately known as the Anarchy, directly complicates things for Brother Cadfael and deputy sheriff Hugh Beringar. I do not like spoilers so no answers here, just some of the questions to be answered in the story - whose body is in the ice, where are the children, who is the stranger, who is committing the raids and murders, why does Cadfael feel a connection to the stranger, who attacked Brother Oswin and left him for dead? These and other questions puzzle Cadfael, Hugh, the reader and others.

It is always a pleasure to read Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael books. One of my little pleasures in life is the knowledge that I have deliberately not yet read them all.
Cadfael is a man of virtue, a healer and a sleuth. The story is timeless, as any good mystery should be. The story works well, set in a time when there was civil war in England, with an empress in the east and a king in the west. Set in 1139 the author provides period maps of England-Wales, a time when much of the population had to seek shelter. In addition to warring factions, a band of marauders murder, rape and pillage area settlers. A young miss, her younger brother and a nun seeking shelter run into the worst of these elements, combined with cold and snow. When the trio separate, the brother and sister eventually find refuge, but the young nun is murdered. It is assumed that the marauders are at fault, but in the mix there is also a monk who tries to help but is savagely beaten and left for dead, a jilted suitor and a mysterious swordsman. It is an interesting blend of colorful characters in a story well told. Cadfael is a continuing character and Peters has written a number of other books on his adventures.
I liked this story because Ellis made nature a character. The story takes place in November 1139. Several nights it snows and obscures the tracks of the human characters as they move about. Toward the end of the story, the weather cooperates and helps Brother Cadfael solve this mystery.

Yves and Ermina Hugonin travel with Brother Elyas and Sister Hilaria are fleeing Worchester. Ermina takes off with her suitor. Yves goes after her, but gets lost. Brother Elyas is attacked and left for dead. Poor Sister Hilaria is killed by what appears to be a drowning. Brother Cadfael and Hugh Berringar arrive to help solve this mystery. Eventually, everyone is reunited and Hilaria's murderer is identified. Ellis gives us another surprise at the end of the book.

She does a great job of weaving in the weather and storms. It's not always bright and sunny, and the cold weather gives you a feel ominous going ons. Hope you enjoy this book.
The Brother Cadfael mysteries are well-wrought and very much give a sense of "being there". The worldly monk has been around he is an ex-crusader who has fought his way throughout the Holy Land and therefore crossed Europe at least twice, and also has loved and lost, before turning to the contemplative life. The characters are all well-drawn and while I cannot speak for the historical accuracy, others more knowledgeable seem to have certified the books' provenance. They are set very firmly in the history of England and provide a bit of education as to the politics and factions of the mid-12th century civil war, which more-or-less rages around the stories and affects them. I uniformly recommend the entire series, or at least the dozen or so I have read. My only quibble is that Cadfael seems a very modern thinker, but then perhaps I am giving too much credence to the notion that medieval people were ignorant and superstitious, rather than being just as rational and sensible as we are, which was probably the case.
